Sydney Open: places and passages

Artist Paula Schiller Gowans interprets Sydney Open in a series of paintings reflecting her experiences of being ushered into many intriguing rooms and through unremarked but important passageways of Sydney's distinctive buildings and sites.

From the boardroom to the Tank Stream, each painting registers the local peculiarity of light, though slightly dimmed to reveal a tonal harmony unavailable at realityís higher wattages. Ranging from an impressive 2-metre by 2-metre polyptych to a framed suite of small vignettes, the paintings are highly structured, semi-abstract compositions.

The paint surface is often multi-layered and open textured, revealing underdrawing and other signs of the painting process in keeping with the contemporary style and presentation of the works. As a visitor or volunteer, Gowans has participated in every Sydney Open since the event began. She has a BFA in film from New York University and a BFA (Hons) in painting from the National Art School. She is also an exhibiting member of the Royal Art Society.

All paintings are available for purchase.
