The view from abroad

This exhibition of 19th century photographs from the collections of Rouse Hill estate illustrated that Australian visitors to Europe returned with a remarkable group of images of the 'Old World'.

Taken with large view cameras by professional European photographers like the Alinari brothers (Florence), or Robert Macpherson (Rome), these views of England, France, Switzerland and Italy captured the great composition skills, colours and tones of late 19th century photography.
