A city oasis where history and heritage meet contemporary design
The Mint’s beautiful building dates back to 1811. It was originally part of the colony’s first permanent hospital, known as the Rum Hospital because it was financed by a monopoly on rum imports. Because of its prominent location, the building has been used for a variety of purposes over the years, including as a branch of Britain’s Royal Mint, as a law court, a military hospital and even an artist’s studio! The redevelopment and refurbishment of the site won the Sir John Sulman Medal for Outstanding Public Architecture.
