Media release: From Our Place

From Our Place - an exhibition celebrating the unique stories of the First Peoples of NSW comes to Rouse Hill House & Farm.

From Our Place: An exhibition from NSW Aboriginal Cultural Centres, hosted at the Muru Mittigar Cultural Centre at Rouse Hill House & Farm, celebrates the unique stories of the First Peoples of NSW through beautifully crafted, vibrant artworks and cultural objects.

Despite the long lasting effects of cultural disruption, Aboriginal culture continues to survive and be renewed in NSW. This exhibition is a testament to the enduring nature of Aboriginal culture.

From Our Place is presented by the Aboriginal Culture Heritage & Arts Association (ACHAA) and curated by Gumbaynggirr artist, Alison Williams. The exhibition promotes strength, self-esteem and pride among Aboriginal communities by acknowledging and exploring identity, heritage and culture.

The exhibition includes wall-hangings and cultural artefacts, woven and carved sculptures, sound and video recordings drawn from the collection of nine NSW Aboriginal-owned cultural centres, who have banded together for the first time.

“Each centre has been a response to its community’s desire and will to have its own keeping and meeting place where art and culture can be collected, maintained and renewed through practice and application,” explains Williams, who was also the inaugural chair of ACHAA.

“There are also vastly diverse landscapes across NSW and this is represented in the centres’ collections, as engagement with the land is central to Aboriginal cultures.”

From Our Place: An exhibition from NSW Aboriginal Cultural Centres at Muru Mittigar Cultural Centre, Rouse Hill House & Farm is the final stop in a tour of four cultural venues including the Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre, Deniliquin (2016), Temora Rural Musuem (2017) and Yarrawarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre, Corindi Beach (2017).

From Our Place: An Exhibition from NSW Aboriginal Centres is presented by ACHAA and proudly sponsored by Museums & Galleries of NSW and the NSW Government through Arts NSW.
Rouse Hill House & Farm is situated on Darug Country.
