New SLM Chair and Trustees

In late December 2018, the Minister for the Arts, The Hon Don Harwin MLC, announced board appointments for the State Cultural Institutions in 2019.

Naseema Sparks AM has been appointed Chair of the SLM Board of Trustees, replacing Michael Rose AM, whose term ended in 2018. Naseema was appointed a trustee in 2014. She is an experienced company director and serves on a number of boards, including those of ASX-listed private equity companies, and for arts and education bodies. She is a former managing director of the advertising company M&C Saatchi.

Of her appointment, Naseema said: ‘There is increasing interest in the heritage and beginnings of Sydney, from NSW residents and international visitors alike. SLM’s portfolio of 12 significant properties allows us to live the history of not only the men and women who first settled this city, but the shared history, including the Indigenous history. I’m passionate about making early NSW stories available and accessible to everyone, and very proud to work with the board and management of this leading and bold agency’.

Two new trustees have been appointed to the board.

Ruth Medd is a Certified Practising Accountant and former IT professional who has been pursuing a career as a non-executive director since 2000. She is the Chair of Women on Boards and a director of the National Foundation for Australian Women. Previously she has been chair of Australian Ethical Superannuation Authority, and prior executive roles include executive director of the Australian Association of National Advertisers and senior positions with Telstra, the Australian Broadcasting Tribunal and the federal government.

Lachlan Edwards is an investment banker and company director who is one of the founding partners of a new corporate advisory firm, Faraday. He has advised governments, companies and funds on some of the most complex corporate situations in Europe and Australia. His current non-executive roles include chairman of the Turnaround Management Association and chairman of the Advisory Finance Committee of the Sisters of Charity Australia; he is also a director of Hotel Property Investments, and a director of Bell Shakespeare. He has previously co-headed Lazard Australia, and was a managing director of Goldman Sachs and Rothschild (based in London and Sydney).

Ruth and Lachlan take up their appointments in March 2109. Trustee Paddy Carney’s term of appointment concluded in December 2018, and she has now been appointed to the Board of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences.
