There's more to heritage conservation than you think

Sydney Living Museums (SLM) cares for 12 of the most important historic sites in NSW, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hyde Park Barracks and the oldest surviving colonial building still in public use, The Mint.

Heritage matters

In addition to heritage buildings, we manage infrastructure such as roads, paddocks, dams, fences and gates; major fixed plant and equipment; and gardens, landscapes, furniture and artworks.

We conserve, preserve and make publicly accessible culturally significant collections, including the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection, the internationally renowned archaeological collection at the Hyde Park Barracks Museum, and the NSW Police Forensic Photography Archive at the Justice & Police Museum.

Your support matters

We share the stories of our places and their collections with visitors attending our houses and museums, exhibitions, community events and public programs; schoolchildren and teachers through our inspiring and innovative education programs; and overseas visitors, who come to experience Australian history.

We only know ourselves by having a truthful understanding of our past – individually and collectively. In preserving the past for the future, Sydney Living Museums is doing vital work that will resonate down the generations. Our generous donors understand this and their visionary support makes all the difference.

What can your financial gift achieve?

The ongoing conservation of 12 of NSW’s most important sites enables us to share the emotional stories of Australian history.

It conserves our collections, including paper, textile and metal objects.

It helps is to digitise and share our collections with a wider audience.

Our fascinating house museum collections tell us more about the way people lived and worked in the last 200 years. Acquisitions of new objects add to these unique collections.

It helps us to create innovative, engaging and inclusive education programs, including outreach programs.

Sharing our sites and partnering with Indigenous communities helps us to understand the place of both colonial and indigenous history in the development of Australia.

Our museums are held ‘in trust’ for future generations and we must preserve them to ensure a future as valuable as their past.
We can do this with your support through our Annual Appeal 2019.

Donations received through last year’s annual appeal contributed to the delivery of 34 conservation projects, an investment of $4.24 million in our heritage. Highlights included:

  • Painting the interior walls  at Vaucluse House using traditional methods and finishes;
  • Acquiring the significant architectural and design archives of Bruce Rickards and Emmerich Revesz;
  • Conservation works on the cart shed at Rouse Hill House & Farm.
