Exhibition floor talk: Street Photography

Join photo-media artist Anne Zahalka to hear about the candid street photography prolific on Sydney’s streets in the mid-20th century and its lasting visual record.

From the 1930s to the 1960s, commercial street photographers swarmed Sydney’s streets photographing everyday people in candid full-length portraits as they strode by or stopped to pose. Snapped against the background of the city streets, these photographs captured moments in the lives of millions of people out and about in Sydney.

Drawing from countless private family albums, this extraordinary, largely unseen photographic record of Sydney and its people is presented alongside Anne Zahalka’s contemporary interpretation of people on the streets of Sydney today.

Street Photography will be on display at the Museum of Sydney until 21 July 2019.
