Secure the shadow
The installation interpreted the Hyde Park Barracks archaeology collection and women’s history of the site with support from the Australia Council. The installation was the first investigation by contemporary visual artists of the female inmates of the 19th century Hyde Park Barracks Asylum and Immigrants’ Depot. Sifting through evidence - in journals, letters and registers and the grimy and forsaken residue of the Barracks’ archaeology, artists Anne Ferran and Anne Brennan produced photographic works and a collection of handmade books to offer an alternative story of silence and loss.
Developed with support from the Australia Council for the Arts.
