About the program
During this hands-on archaeology program, students use artefacts – including the building – to investigate the layered history of the Hyde Park Barracks and the people who lived there during the 19th century.
Throughout this program students will:
- Excavate, analyse, record and interpret a range of authentic artefacts
- Use physical and documentary evidence to answer an inquiry question
- Think critically about archaeology and what it can tell them about human experience
Students will undertake a historical inquiry into the lives of female immigrants, applying the processes and methods of both the historian and the archaeologist to draw their own conclusions about both physical and documentary evidence.
The program also includes a simulated archaeological dig in our purpose built trenches. During this activity students work in small groups to excavate, categorise, weigh, measure, sketch and then interpret an artefact.
Some of the fascinating archaeology your students will see during the program:

Rats were integral in the archaeology of the barracks because they created their nests from all sorts of different artefacts.

Game tokens and coins give us clues that convicts might have broken the ‘no gambling’ rule while they were lodged at the barracks.

Children and adults all like to play games – from clay marbles and chalk to wooden blocks and a tea cup. The barracks has been a place of games since 1819.

Assorted items found under the floor at Hyde Park Barracks.

Smoking clay pipes was a common way for convicts to pass free time – each pipe has different clues about when it was made, and who might of made it.

Personal religious materials help give a sense of agency to the many different people that passed through the barracks over time.

Immigrant women often completed sewing tasks on board the ships the travelled to Australia on. This practice would have continued as they waited in the building to be hired out for work.

Scraps of clothing relate to different people and periods and help us understand what fashion was available at different periods of time.
