Meroogal Women’s Art Prize 2020: Terms and Conditions

For the purpose of these Terms and Conditions, the following definitions apply:

Entrant refers to anyone who has submitted a complete entry form.

Successful entrant/Finalist refers to an entrant whose work is selected for display in the exhibition at Meroogal.

Prize winner refers to an entrant selected as first prize winner or runner-up.

SLM denotes Sydney Living Museums.

MWAP denotes the Meroogal Women’s Art Prize.

The Property refers to the Sydney Living Museums property Meroogal, in Nowra.

  1. Entrants

    1. The entrant must be a woman 18 years of age or over.

    2. The entrant must be a resident of NSW.

    3. Employees of Sydney Living Museums (SLM) and their families are not eligible to enter the MWAP.

  2. Entry fee

FREE: in light of the current situation in NSW, SLM has chosen to waive the fees for entrants for 2020.

  1. The Artwork

    1. A maximum of two artworks per entrant may be submitted.

    2. All entries must be the original work of the entrant.

    3. The artwork(s) must have been made in the 12 months prior to submission (August 2019 to August 2020).

    4. The artwork(s) must not have been exhibited previously.

    5. The artwork(s) must have been made in response to the historic house of Meroogal, its former occupants, and/or its meaning within broader historical and contemporary contexts.

    6. The artwork(s) must be within the overall size and weight limits detailed in Clause 5.

  2. Artist’s statement

    1. An artist’s statement of no more than 80 words must be submitted via the online entry form.

    2. The statement will be read by the judges during the selection process and should clearly explain how the artwork responds to Meroogal.

    3. Should the artwork be selected for exhibition, the artist’s statement will be used in the exhibition catalogue, and may also be used for promotional and marketing purposes. Minor edits to artist’s statements may occur, and, where time constraints allow, SLM will endeavour to seek the artist’s approval on final text.

  3. Size and media guidelines

    1. The prize is open to artworks in any style or medium, with the exception of materials that are dangerous, sharp, wet or perishable.

    2. Final display dimensions (including all parts) of two-dimensional artworks must not exceed 150cm in any direction (including frame).

    3. Final display dimensions (including all parts) of three-dimensional artworks must not exceed 100cm x 100cm x 100cm, or weigh more than 15kg.

    4. In the instance where a Finalist’s artwork’s display dimensions differ from those provided on the entry form, the Finalist will not be eligible to receive a prize; however, SLM will endeavour to display the artwork.

    5. New-media works must be playable on Quicktime or VLC media players on both PC and Mac computers. Limitations for digital hardware apply, and must be discussed with SLM staff at the outset.

    6. All artworks must arrive ready for display:

      • Two-dimensional works must have secure display and hanging devices (e.g. framed, D-rings etc).

      • Three-dimensional works must be able to stand alone.

      • New-media works must be supplied on appropriate hardware, electronically or on a storage device such as a USB drive in consultation with SLM staff.

    7. Any instructions for handling and packing must be supplied in writing and be attached to the artwork.

    8. Submission of any site-specific external artworks must be discussed with SLM staff at the outset.

    9. Due to the nature of the competition and the Property, placement of artwork(s) is at the discretion of SLM staff and preferred placement of artwork(s) cannot be guaranteed.

  4. Insurance

Where a loan receipt is issued by SLM, artwork(s) securely displayed within the interior of the Property will be covered by SLM insurance upon signature of this receipt and arrival on site, until they are collected at the close of the exhibition and competition. SLM will not be responsible for any loss or damage whatsoever, and however caused, to any artwork(s) displayed outdoors at the Property. The Property has regular security patrols, but SLM cannot guarantee the safety of works displayed outdoors.

  1. Judging panel and management of MWAP

    1. A panel of judges will select the Finalists and winners. The panel will consist of representatives from the arts, including an SLM representative and a member of the Shoalhaven region arts community.

    2. The decision of the judging panel is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

    3. The exhibition and competition will be managed under the direction of SLM staff.

    4. SLM staff have the right to refuse to display any entry due to its nature (e.g. bulk, weight, delicacy), or its inability to be exhibited safely.

  2. Selection process

    1. All entries for the MWAP will be assessed on the basis of the application submitted and the accompanying images or audio/video files. Selection will be based on:

      • Degree of artistic merit and development of concepts

      • Level of recognition of, and direct response to, the Property and its collection, gardens and stories.

    2. Entrants whose works are selected for display (Finalists) will be notified by Friday 28 August 2020.

    3. All entrants will be formally notified of the selection of Finalists either by email or by letter.

  3. Prizes

    1. 1st prize: $7000, SLM Membership, and a Bundanon Trust artist-in-residence scholarship. See Clause 14 for details.

    2. 2nd prize: $3000 and SLM Membership.

    3. Highly Commended: SLM Membership and solo exhibition at Shoalhaven Regional Gallery, Nowra, including opening event. See Clause 15 for details.

    4. People’s Choice Award: $500 and SLM Membership. To be announced at the close of the exhibition.

  4. Delivery and collection of artworks

    1. Artists accept full responsibility for arranging transportation for the delivery and collection of their artworks, and agree to bear all costs involved.

    2. Transit insurance is the full responsibility of the entrant. SLM staff will not be responsible for, or liable for, any loss or damage to artworks during transit.

    3. Finalists must deliver their artworks to Meroogal on either Thursday 10 September 2020 or Saturday 12 September 2020 between 10am and 3pm. A contact telephone number will be provided when artists are notified of their inclusion.

    4. Final digital files must be delivered with hardware, electronically or on a storage device (USB drive), by the final delivery date for all artworks.

    5. Artworks delivered after Saturday 12 September 2020 will not be accepted.

    6. Each artwork must be clearly labelled with its title and the Finalist’s name and contact details.

    7. Finalists must pick up their exhibited artworks on either Thursday  22 April 2021 or Saturday 24 April 2021 between 10am and 3pm.

    8. Artworks not collected by Saturday 29 May 2021 will be disposed of at the discretion of SLM. SLM will incur no liability in respect of the disposal of any artwork(s).

  5. Exhibition dates
    The exhibition dates for the Meroogal Women’s Art Prize are now confirmed as 19 September 2020 – 17 April 2021. As Covid 19 restrictions are easing across NSW, the house will be open to the public and the Meroogal Women’s Art Prize will be displayed in the house. Finalists’ artworks will be displayed on the Sydney Living Museum website, but there will be no e-catalogue.

  6. Reproduction, media and publicity

    1. Finalists consent to their artwork(s) being photographed and reproduced for documentation and promotion for no charge. Images and reproductions can be used at any time and inclusive of all electronic or print media, for all non-commercial purposes in association with the MWAP and SLM for this and future competitions and exhibitions.

    2. SLM will acknowledge the artist and credit images of the artworks when appropriate.

  7. Sale of artworks

If a visitor inquires about purchasing an artwork in the exhibition, SLM will provide the Finalist with the interested party’s contact details. SLM will not actively promote the sale of artworks.

  1. Bundanon Trust artist-in-residence scholarship prize

    1. A Bundanon Trust artist-in-residence scholarship will be offered to the Finalist who wins first prize.

    2. The two-week residency must be taken between July and December 2021.

  2. Solo exhibition at Shoalhaven Regional Gallery, Nowra

    1. A solo exhibition at Shoalhaven Regional Gallery, Nowra, in 2021–22, will be offered to the Finalist awarded Highly Commended.

    2. The exhibition period, duration and conditions will be confirmed upon discussions between the award winner and Shoalhaven Regional Gallery, Nowra.

    3. The award will consist of an exhibition in one of the community galleries for either a 4-week period or an 8-week period, with the total value being up to $1300.

    4. Shoalhaven Regional Gallery, Nowra, will cover the exhibition costs and contribute towards the opening event.

    5. The artist will be responsible for any advertising beyond the standard collateral produced by Shoalhaven Regional Gallery, Nowra.

  3. Extension of exhibition of works

There is potential that a selection of works from the MWAP may be displayed at another SLM museum after June 2021. Selected artists will be notified and formally requested to participate, with new terms and conditions issued at that time.
