Magic Lantern Show

The Rouse family’s magic lantern show

Behold the wonder of magic lantern shows held at Rouse Hill House for 150 years! This 19th century home image projection technology was first brought to the house from London in the 1860s, together with a collection of hand-painted story-telling and comic slides. Generations of Rouse and Terry family members saw these slides projected using the light provided by an oil lamp, with camphor added to increase the brilliance. Today visitors can travel back in time to those earlier mesmerising family entertainments through a new digital storytelling format.
