Meroogal by John Samuel Browning, 1903

Meroogal, on the corner of West and Worrigee Streets, was built in 1885-1886 for Mrs Jessie Catherine Thorburn and her unmarried children. The house was designed by Jessie Thorburn's brother Kenneth McKenzie and built on land purchased by her eldest son Robert Taylor Thorburn.

John Samuel Browning, the creator of this watercolour drawing was a friend of the Thorburn family. He was a retired civil servant who had been Commissioner of Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor in Nelson, New Zealand.
