New look on way for Sydney (1963)
In 1960, NSW Labor Premier Robert Heffron called for developers both in Australia and overseas to submit proposals for the redevelopment of The Rocks area in Sydney. In this1963 film titled New look on way for Sydney, the winning scheme by James Wallace Pty Ltd is unveiled. While leading us through the streets and laneways of The Rocks, the narrator tells us all the buildings would be demolished under the 30 million pound scheme to transform the 'gateway to the city'.
The film also features a short interview with local resident Girlie Andersen. Standing outside her home at 58 Gloucester Street, now part of Susannah Place Museum, Girlie calmly declares that she would refuse to leave her home or be sent out to ‘woop woop’.
