Universities speak through their buildings, and the recent addition of the Abercrombie Building to the University of Sydney Darlington campus, says it's anything but business as usual. This new generation learning environment is a milestone in the University of Sydney Business School’s journey to becoming one of the world’s leading business schools.

Woods Bagot designed the Abercrombie Building as a 'marketplace of learning' that consolidates the University of Sydney Business School facilities across nine buildings on the Camperdown/Darlington campuses. A key objective for Abercrombie was to reshape the traditional education hierarchy of teaching, learning and research. The layout and interiors are designed to foster greater interaction with the business community, through a more transparent and connected building with informal learning environments and exposed stairways linking the various floors.

Under its umbrella are over 9,000 square metres of flexible teaching and learning space, including three lecture theatres, eight study rooms, 40 seminar rooms and 1,500 square metres of informal learning space. The focus is on cross-disciplinary collaboration between leading research and interactive learning, with a view to finding and designing solutions for the economic, social and environmental challenges facing today's business world.

Where old school thinking once saw education buildings as siloes within a setting, the Abercrombie Building is a respectful campus neighbour that opens itself up to the historic community of Darlington. An existing Sydney Blue Gum was retained and celebrated as the centrepiece around which the building wraps. It's just one of the ways the architects have integrated Abercrombie Building into its setting. Another is the double-skin façade that responds to both outside and interior conditions, delivering privacy and sightlines through its timber blades, which also control daylight to study areas.
