Meet the speakers

Catherine Love, Interior Design and Hospitality Sector Lead, Director, PTW Architects Sydney

Creative, curious, astute, spirited, intrepid, realistic, connected and cooperative are qualities that intersect in Catherine’s approach to design practice in Australia and East Asia. Catherine is committed to enriching collaboration and synergies between people, offices, cultures, cities and countries.

Hear Catherine present her perspective on design through a diversity of projects across multiple countries and cultures. She will explore the PTW culture of design reviews, talks, collaborations and global engagement.

Natalia Krysiak & Andrew Fong, Associates, Hayball Architects

Andrew and Natalia will be exploring why ‘play’ is an important component of innovative work and learning environments and how it can be integrated into the design process.

The talk will showcase projects across various sectors which have incorporated playful design elements and will explore playful ways of co-creating through prototyping and workshopping.

 

Andrew Cortese, Managing Partner, Grimshaw Architects

Andrew established the partnership’s Sydney Studio in 2010 and leads conceptual design and strategy across the studio’s portfolio. Operating at many scales, Andrew’s work challenges, evolves and advances building typologies. Hear Andrew discuss Grimshaw’s environmental and social agenda in relation to the built environment.

Exemplary projects include The University of Sydney’s F23 Administration Building, UNSW Hilmer and Science and Engineering Building, 333 George Street, Arthur Phillip High School, Harbour Mill Apartments, Monash Woodside Building for Technology and Design and Martin Place Metro.

Claire Nunez, Senior Associate and Manager, Heritage Places, GML Heritage

Join Claire as she discusses hidden treasures in Sydney and how particular projects have allowed GML Heritage to explore an engineering wonder, a funerary landscape and a skilfully converted industrial space.

Claire has extensive experience working on heritage assessments, management plans and liaising with a wide variety of stakeholders including Australian federal and state government agencies, as well as international organisations, community groups and industry representatives. 

 

Andrew Pettifer, Principal, Arup

Join Andrew for a look at how engineering design has shaped Sydney. Since arriving in Sydney to engineer the Sydney Opera House, Arup have played a key role in shaping iconic buildings in our city.

This talk will reflect on the impact that world  class multi-disciplinary engineering can have on supporting the delivery of great architecture. It will highlight in particular the engineering stories behind a number of the buildings included in Sydney Open.

Dr Vanessa Berry, University of Sydney

Vanessa Berry is a writer who works with history, memory and archives and is a Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Sydney.

Since 2012 Vanessa Berry has been writing the award-winning blog (now also a book) Mirror Sydney, which investigates overlooked, hidden and secret places in the city and suburbs.

Join Vanessa as she shares some of her favourite Sydney sites and stories from the city and beyond.

Chris Bickerton, Senior Associate, Computational Designer, BVN

The robots are here!  Industrial robot arms and digitally connected manufacturing technologies (like 3D printing) are increasingly becoming integrated into our industry.  BVN is working towards being leaders in this exciting field by maintaining and growing relationships to collaborate on applied research opportunities. 

The use of these tools can unlock new ways of designing which are more materially focused, faster, more flexible and less carbon intensive than traditional manufacturing techniques.  Hear Chris discuss some of the work that BVN in doing in this field.
