A Thousand Words: Historical Fiction Writing Competition

  1. Information on how to enter and prizes form part of these Terms and Conditions. Participation in this competition is deemed acceptance of these Terms and Conditions.
  1. Entry to the competition is only open to secondary school students who reside in New South Wales and are enrolled in Years 7–10 in 2020. Sydney Living Museums reserves the right to impose additional eligibility requirements, as outlined below in Items 1 and 2 of Requirements for Competition Entry. Sydney Living Museums employees (and their immediate families) are ineligible to enter.  
  1. To enter, individuals must, during the competition period, follow the directions indicated in Item 2 of Requirements for Competition Entry.
  1. Sydney Living Museums reserves the right, at any time, to verify the validity of entries and entrants (including an entrant’s identity, age, school and place of residence) and to disqualify any entrant who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these Terms and Conditions or who tampers with the entry process. Errors and omissions may be accepted at Sydney Living Museums’ discretion. Failure by Sydney Living Museums to enforce any of its rights at any stage does not constitute a waiver of those rights.
  1. The number of entries permitted is indicated in Item 3 of Requirements for Competition Entry.
  1. The competition commences on the date indicated in Item 4 of Requirements for Competition Entry. Entries close on the date and time indicated in Item 5. All times will be based on Sydney local time. Winners will be notified in writing. Winners’ names and their entries will be published on the Sydney Living Museums website. The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
  1. The prize or prizes to be awarded are indicated in Item 6 of Requirements for Competition Entry. If more than one (1) prize is to be awarded, the prizes will be awarded in descending order of value.
  1. Competition entrants under the age of 18 years must provide Sydney Living Museums with written consent from their parent or guardian to enter the competition.
  1. Total prize pool is the value indicated in Item 6 of Requirements for Competition Entry. Prizes, or any unused portion of a prize, are not transferable or exchangeable and cannot be taken as cash.
  1. When an entrant submits any materials via the competition, including comments, recordings and images (‘Content’), the entrant, unless Sydney Living Museums advises otherwise, licenses and grants Sydney Living Museums, its affiliates and sub-licensees a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, worldwide, irrevocable, and sub-licensable right to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish and display such Content for the purpose of promoting Sydney Living Museums and this competition, without compensation, restriction on use, attribution or liability. Entrants warrant that they have the full authority to grant these rights. Sydney Living Museums will acknowledge the entrant’s moral rights with regards to the Content and attribute accordingly.

Entrants agree that they are fully responsible for the Content they submit. Sydney Living Museums shall not be liable in any way for such Content to the full extent permitted by law. Sydney Living Museums may remove any Content without notice for any reason whatsoever. Entrants warrant and agree that: (a) they will not submit any Content that is unlawful or fraudulent, or that Sydney Living Museums may deem in breach of any intellectual property, privacy, publicity or other rights, defamatory, obscene, derogatory, pornographic, sexually inappropriate, violent, abusive, harassing, threatening, objectionable with respect to race, religion, origin or gender, not suitable for children aged under 15, or otherwise unsuitable for publication; (b) they will obtain prior consent from any person or property that appears in their Content; (c) they will obtain full prior consent from any person who has jointly created or has any rights in the Content, to the uses and terms herein; (d) their Content shall not contain viruses or cause injury or harm to any person or entity; and (e) they will comply with all applicable laws and regulations, including without limitation, those governing copyright, content, defamation, privacy, publicity and the access or use of others’ computer or communication systems.

  1. Entrants that consent to Sydney Living Museums using their name, likeness, image and/or voice in the event they are a winner (including photograph, film and/or recording of the same) in any media do so for an unlimited period without remuneration for the purpose of promoting this competition (including any outcome), and promoting any products manufactured, distributed and/or supplied by Sydney Living Museums.
  1. Entrants or their parents or guardians have the right to withhold permission from Sydney Living Museums to publish the entrant’s name with their entry in the event they are a winner. In this case, only the entrant’s age and the name of the school the entrant attends will be published.
  1. Any cost associated with accessing the Sydney Living Museums competition website is the entrant’s responsibility and is dependent on the internet service provider used.
  1. The use of any automated entry software or any other mechanical or electronic means that allows an entrant to automatically enter repeatedly is prohibited and will render all entries submitted by that entrant invalid.
  1. If this competition is interfered with in any way or is not capable of being conducted as reasonably anticipated due to any reason beyond the reasonable control of Sydney Living Museums, Sydney Living Museums reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to the fullest extent permitted by law: (a) to disqualify any entrant; or (b) subject to any written directions from a regulatory authority, to modify, suspend, terminate or cancel the competition, as appropriate.
  1. Nothing in these Terms and Conditions limits, excludes or modifies or purports to limit, exclude or modify the statutory consumer guarantees as provided under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010, as well as any other implied warranties under the Australian Securities and Investments Commission Act 2001 or similar consumer protection laws in the State and Territories of Australia (‘Non-Excludable Guarantees’). Except for any liability that cannot by law be excluded, including the Non-Excludable Guarantees, Sydney Living Museums (including its respective officers, employees and agents) excludes all liability (including negligence), for any personal injury; or any loss or damage (including loss of opportunity); whether direct, indirect, special or consequential, arising in any way out of the competition.
  1. Except for any liability that cannot by law be excluded, including the Non-Excludable Guarantees, Sydney Living Museums (including its respective officers, employees and agents) is not responsible for and excludes all liability (including negligence), for any personal injury; or any loss or damage (including loss of opportunity); whether direct, indirect, special or consequential, arising in any way out of: (a) any technical difficulties or equipment malfunction (whether or not under Sydney Living Museums’ control); (b) any theft, unauthorised access or third party interference; (c) any entry or prize claim that is late, lost, altered, damaged or misdirected (whether or not after their receipt by Sydney Living Museums) due to any reason beyond the reasonable control of Sydney Living Museums; (d) any variation in prize value to that stated in these Terms and Conditions; (e) any tax liability incurred by a winner or entrant; or (f) use of a prize.
  1. Sydney Living Museums collects personal information in order to conduct the competition and may, for this purpose, disclose such information to third parties, including but not limited to agents, contractors, service providers, prize suppliers and, as required, to Australian regulatory authorities. Entry is conditional on providing this information. Sydney Living Museums may, for an indefinite period, unless otherwise advised, use the information for marketing, publicity, research and profiling purposes, including sending electronic messages or telephoning the entrant. Entrants should direct any request to opt out, access, update or correct information to Sydney Living Museums. All entries become the property of Sydney Living Museums.

REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPETITION ENTRY

Item 1

Entry is open to secondary school students who reside in New South Wales and are enrolled in years 7, 8, 9 or 10 during the 2020 school year.

Item 2

  1. To enter the competition, individuals must, during the competition period, visit sydneylivingmuseums.com.au/writingcomp, follow the prompts to the competition entry page and input all requested details into the entry form before submitting their competition entry;
  1. To be eligible, entries must comply with the following requirements:
      1. Entries must be submitted as a document online via the Sydney Living Museums website and accompanied by a completed entry form.
      2. Entries must have a minimum length of 750 words and a maximum length of 1000 words.
      3. Entries must reference a photograph from the A Thousand Words exhibition and must include the photograph reference number in the entry form. A selection of images is available on atwonline.com.au
  1. Entrants warrant that their entry has not previously been published in any media.
  1. Additional guidelines and judging criteria are available on the competition webpage, sydneylivingmuseums.com.au/writingcomp.

Item 3

  1. Only one (1) entry is permitted per person.
  2. Entries must be verified by a NESA-accredited teacher at the school where the student is enrolled.
  3. Entries submitted by entrants under the age of 18 years must provide consent from their parent or guardian to enter the competition.

Prize or prizes to be awarded include:

Stage 4 category

  • One winner will receive $250 and a 12-month Sydney Living Museums Member Plus One membership*, valued at $145
  • One runner-up will receive $100

Stage 5 category

  • One winner will receive $250 and a 12-month Sydney Living Museums Member Plus One membership*, valued at $145
  • One runner-up will receive $100

The total value of prizes is $990.

* Membership will be activated when Sydney Living Museums sites reopen to the public.
