Terms and conditions: Meroogal Women’s Art Prize 2016

For the purpose of these Terms and Conditions, the following terminologies apply:  

  • Entrant refers to anyone who has submitted a complete entry form, including payment.
  • Successful entrant/Finalist refers to entrants whose works are selected for display in the exhibition at Meroogal.
  • Prize winner refers to an entrant selected as first prize winner or runner-up. 
  • SLM denotes Sydney Living Museums.
  • MWAP denotes the Meroogal Women’s Art Prize.
  • The Property refers to the Sydney Living Museums property Meroogal, in Nowra.

  1. Entrants
    1. The entrant must be a woman of 18 years of age or over.
    2. The entrant must be a resident of NSW.
    3. The entrant’s artwork(s) must be within the overall size and weight limits detailed in Clause 5.
    4. Employees of Sydney Living Museums (SLM) and their families are not eligible to enter the MWAP.
  1. Entry fee
    1. An entry fee is charged to cover administration costs:
      • $30 (including GST) for one entry
      • $55 (including GST) for two entries.
    2. The entry fee is non-refundable.
    3. Payment can be made by via the online entry form.
  1. The artwork
    1. A maximum of two artworks per entrant may be submitted.
    2. All entries must be the original work of the entrant.
    3. The artwork(s) must have been made in the previous 12 months (August 2015 to August 2016). Works must not have been exhibited previously.
    4. The artwork(s) must have been made in response to the Property and its stories.
  1. Artist’s statement
    1. An artist’s statement of no more than 80 words can be submitted via the online entry form.
    2. The statement will be read by the judges during the selection process.
    3. Should the artwork be selected for the exhibition, the artist’s statement will be used in the exhibition catalogue, and may also be used for promotional and marketing purposes. Minor edits to artist’s statements may occur, and, where time constraints allow, SLM will endeavor to seek artist’s approval on final text.
  2. Size and media guidelines
    1. The prize is open to artworks in any style or medium, with the exception of materials that are dangerous, sharp, wet or perishable.
    2. Two-dimensional artworks must not exceed 150cm in any direction (including frame).
    3. Three-dimensional artworks must not exceed 100cm x 100cm x 100cm, or weigh more than 15kg.
    4. New-media works must be playable on Quicktime, Vimeo or VLC media players on both PC and Mac computers. Limitations for digital hardware apply, and must be discussed with SLM staff at the outset.
    5. All artworks must arrive ready for display:
      • Two-dimensional works must have secure hanging devices (D rings).
      • Three-dimensional works must be able to stand alone or sit on a plinth.
      • New-media works must be supplied on appropriate hardware, electronically or on a storage device (USB, CD or DVD).
    6. Any instructions for handling and packing must be supplied in writing and be attached to the artwork.
    7. Submission of any site-specific artworks must be discussed with SLM staff at the outset. Due to the nature of the competition and the Property, preferred placement cannot be guaranteed.
  3. Insurance
    1. Where a loan agreement is issued by SLM and has been signed by the finalist, artworks will be covered by SLM insurance from when they arrive onsite to when they are collected. Outdoor works are displayed at the artist’s own risk. The Property has regular security patrols, but SLM cannot guarantee the safety of works displayed outdoors.
  4. Judging panel and management of MWAP
    1. A panel of judges will select the finalists and winners. The panel will consist of representatives from the arts, including an SLM employee and a member of the Shoalhaven region arts community. 
    2. The decision of the judging panel is final and no correspondence shall be entered into.
    3. The exhibition will be managed under the direction of SLM staff.
    4. SLM staff have the right to refuse to display any entry that, because of its nature (eg bulk, weight, delicacy), cannot be exhibited safely.
  5. Selection process
    1. All entries for the MWAP will be assessed on the basis of the application submitted and the accompanying images or audio/video files. Selection will be based on:
      • Degree of artistic merit and development of concepts
      • Level of recognition of, and direct response to, the Property, its collections, gardens and stories.
    2. Entrants whose works are selected for display (Finalists) will be notified by Tuesday 6 September 2016, and all entrants will be formally notified of the selection of finalists either by email or letter.
  6. Prizes
    1. 1st prize: $6000 and a Bundanon Trust artist-in-residence scholarship. See Clause 13 for details. 
    2. 2nd prize: $3000
    3. 3rd prize: $1000
  1. Delivery and collection of artworks
    1. Artists accept full responsibility for arranging transportation for the delivery and collection of their artworks, and agree to bear all costs involved.
    2. Transit insurance is the full responsibility of the entrant. SLM staff will not be responsible for, or liable for, any loss or damage to artworks during transit.
    3. Finalists must deliver their artworks to the Property on either Tuesday 13 or Saturday 17 September 2016.
    4. Final digital files must be delivered with hardware, electronically or on a storage device (USB, CD or DVD) by the final delivery date of all works.
    5. Late entries will not be accepted.
    6. Each artwork must be clearly labelled with its title and the artist’s name and contact details.
    7. No artworks will be released before the close of the exhibition on Saturday 28 January 2017.
    8. After the close of the exhibition, artists must pick up their exhibited artworks on either Monday 30 January or Saturday 4 February 2017. Artworks not collected by Saturday 26 February 2017 will be disposed of at the discretion of SLM. SLM will incur no liability in respect of the disposal of any artworks.
  2. Reproduction, media and publicity
    1. Finalists consent to their artwork being photographed and reproduced for documentation and promotion for no charge, to be used at any time and inclusive of all electronic or print media, for all non-commercial purposes in association with the MWAP and SLM for this and future competitions and exhibitions.
    2. SLM will endeavor to acknowledge the artist and credit images of the artworks when appropriate.
    3. Prize winners and finalists agree to make themselves available for the purposes of promotion and publicity at times and dates and in places reasonably requested by SLM, for example:
  • Finalists agree to make every effort to attend the opening event on Friday 23 September and the public event on Saturday 24 September 2016.
  • Finalists are prepared to be involved in a program or workshop at the property. 
  1. Sale of artworks

If a visitor inquires about purchasing an artwork on display in the exhibition, SLM will provide the artist with the visitor’s contact details. SLM will not actively promote the sale of artworks. 

  1. Bundanon Trust artist-in-residence scholarship prize

A Bundanon Trust artist-in-residence scholarship will be offered to the entrant who wins first prize. The two-week residency must be taken between Monday 10 and Sunday 23 July 2017.
