Media release: Convict Escapades
Convict Escapades, the hugely popular immersive theatre experience, returns in the April school holidays, taking families on a fun-filled adventure through the incredible convict history of Sydney’s Hyde Park Barracks Museum.
Written by award-winning playwright Jessica Bellamy and directed by Danielle O’Keefe, Convict Escapades invites kids (ideal for 6 – 12 year olds) and families to don broad arrow shirts and travel back in time for a unique ‘choose-your-own’ adventure. No two Convict Escapade adventures are the same.
The World Heritage listed Hyde Park Barracks is one of the most significant convict sites in the world. A crossroads for tens of thousands of people, it played a central role in the world’s largest and longest-running system of convict transportation.
With an array of colourful convict characters lurking around every corner, Convict Escapaders will have to keep their wits about them to complete a convict quest on time and earn their prized ’ticket of leave’.
Becoming part of the Barracks’ motley gang of convicts, children will be mustered by the mean superintendent, meet the lovesick cook, be tricked by the convict ‘magpie’ in his clown suit and avoid punishment from the shifty scourge. Hear about Henry Green, the most famous rat catcher in the Barracks and meet Ann Carruthers as she is sentenced by a judge for disorderly conduct. Learn some convict slang, beware the perils of laundry day and find out what it’s really like to sleep in the hammocks.
“Convict Escapades brings to life the wealth of stories and characters of Hyde Park Barracks in a compelling and entertaining way for families. Children brave enough to step inside and don their convict uniform will discover what life was like for the many convicts had the misfortune to call the Barracks their home,” said Head of Programs, Janson Hawes.
With stories, singing, tattooing and fun jobs to do, Convict Escapades is a fantastically fun, eye-opening and perhaps a little treacherous convict caper.
