About the artwork
“Every man has memories" – a line spoken by the Action in Vietnam narrator midway through the film that documents Australia’s serviceman during the Vietnam war – struck a powerful chord for Matt Jones. Footage of the young Australian servicemen reminded him of his early army experiences. This, and the concept of memory and the mind, became the focus of this artwork. Matt asked people who had served in the Australian Army to provide one photo which for them conveys the idea “every man has memories” as a defining signature of their career. The artwork is a collage of these, recognising that the military is the sum of the whole and not the reflection of any one individual.
