Open doors: Elizabeth Farm

In this online talk, find out more about Elizabeth Farm on Burramattagal land: home of the Macarthur family and Australia’s oldest house.

First built in 1793 near the infant colony’s second centre Parramatta, Elizabeth Farm was extended over the next 4 decades as walls were demolished, floors dropped, and French doors and verandahs added. At the same time the colonial building trade was growing into a fledgling professional industry, with professional builders and architects. Go under the floors and into the roof and discover how, under John Macarthur’s direction, a simple, generic cottage grew into the colonial bungalow that we see today.

Join curator Dr Scott Hill to hear more about this fascinating historic house.
