Learn the stories of Sydney’s oldest public houses, exploring the social, cultural and brewing histories of the early settlers and beyond. Discover how Australian drinking culture has changed and evolved over time.
Led by historian and curator Dr Charles Pickett, the walking tour will take you on a journey through the historic Rocks precinct of Sydney, visiting its various colonial and early-20th-century pubs. End the tour with an optional visit with your new friends at Sydney’s oldest pub to quench a well-earned thirst.
The tour is outdoors and includes steps and uneven surfaces. A reasonable level of fitness and mobility are required. The event will proceed in wet weather, except in extreme conditions. Please dress appropriately.
Dr Charles Pickett was Curator of Design and Society at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney. He has curated exhibitions about the history of brewing and hotels for the Powerhouse, the Justice & Police Museum, the Customs House and the City Gallery, Melbourne and the State Library of NSW exhibition Imagine a city: 200 years of public architecture in NSW (2016).
