A rare survivor in the heart of The Rocks, Susannah Place is a typically British terrace of four working-class houses built by Irish immigrants in 1844.

With their basement kitchens, tiny backyards, and outhouses, the houses were home to more than 100 families over nearly 150 years. Fascinating evidence of their occupation remains in the layers of paint, wallpaper and linoleum, and remnants of past modifications and repairs.

Remaining largely unchanged through the slum clearances of the early 20th century and the redevelopment of The Rocks in the 1970s, Susannah Place is now a museum dedicated to the personal stories of people who once called this place, and The Rocks neighbourhood, home.

On Sunday 4 November

What’s open?

All four terraces, basement kitchens, backyards and outside washhouses; and the re-created 1915 corner shop, selling authentic goods and wares from this era.
