Sydney Open volunteers: a personal perspective

Sydney Open, an iconic event in Sydney’s calendar that couldn’t be possible without the hundreds of passionate volunteers, that enlighten Sydney siders and visitors alike of the history of this great city.

Joanne Kennett is one of our dedicated Site Supervisor Volunteers who has been part of our volunteer team since 2014. A passionate SLM Event Volunteer and member of the NSW regional committee for a professional body; Joanne enjoys all things motor biking, scuba diving, cooking and travelling. When she isn’t volunteering, Joanne works for a bank where she helps increase inclusion of businesses run by traditionally disadvantaged groups, or those which have a social mission, into their supply chain.

As part of the Sydney Open team, we asked Joanne a few questions about her experiences and memories of Sydney Open from a very unique perspective. Read on to find out more about just one of our amazing volunteers!

What enticed you to volunteer for Sydney Open?

I was keen to give some of my time back to my community and I saw a picture of the building I was working in in an ad for Sydney Open and was inspired to explore the opportunity further. During the interview Alison asked me if I would like to be considered for role of a site supervisor, feeling brave, I accepted and loved it. Following my first Sydney Open I was asked to apply for the role of an SLM Event Volunteer which I have also loved doing since then.

What has been your most rewarding experience volunteering at Sydney Open?

There have been so many rewarding experiences during the Sydney Open that it is hard to pick one. My favourite part of the event however is learning about the buildings open during the event and passing this information to visitors. I feel like a guide into new world and the delight when I share this information people is magical. I also love seeing my volunteer team sharing their nuggets of knowledge with our visitors.

What has been your favourite building/site and why?

The Bell Tower at Town Hall, it’s such a secret place and barely accessible to anyone that it felt like a true honour to be able to visit such a historically important location.

What is it like being part of such a large volunteer team?

Amazing. The SLM team is incredible and the volunteers are enthusiastic and friendly.

What would you to say to someone who is thinking about joining the Sydney Open volunteer team?

Just do it, you will not regret it. It will open your eyes up to a different view of Sydney and help you develop valuable skills that you can take into other aspects of your life. If you’re looking at volunteering this is a great place to start. The time commitment is not huge and the support provided will fully equip you for what you have signed up to.
